Scene opens in the woods on Booth, Brennan and an unknown cop. They talk about how thick the forest is. Brennan wanders off and finds an eye-shaped talisman hanging from a branch. Booth panics when she is lost. When talking to the cop about the eye they find out about Maggie Cinders – an accused witch who was beheaded and legend is she still haunts the woods looking for her severed head. Brennan is sceptic and Booth is a little freaked out and wants to keep moving.

When approaching the taped off area in the clearing we learn that the body was in a pit covered with branches and leaves but was discovered by a group of hikers. The cop thinks that it was Maggie Cinders as she said she would “kill anybody who dared to look for her”. Bones makes a sarcastic comment saying “it must have been difficult for her to talk considering she didn’t have a head”. Booth looks nervous.

We see the body in the pit and Brennan climbs in. We now learn that Maggie Cinders supposedly killed her victims by cutting of their heads. We learn that the victim is male aged between 18-23 and has a video camera. We also find out that he is killed by decapitation – surprise surprise – and his head is now missing. Could this be the work of Maggie Cinders?

Cuts to Brennan, Zach and Cam in lab – the team discuses ghosts – Brennan says she does not believe in ghosts and Cam shares that her mother appeared to her the day after she died. Zach and Brennan say nothing but look sceptical. Jack walks in and shares that the victim died last November – splinters that were found in the neck where the head was support to be date back from the 1800’s when Maggie Cinders was killed. Hodgin’s also shares that Maggie Cinders is rumoured to behead her victims with the same axe she was decapitated with. When Booth enters he reveals the victim to be Graham Hastings a film student who was making a documentary on the Maggie Cinders ledged. Angela calls everyone over as she has cleaned and repaired the remaining film in the camera – we see the woods at night and then a girl running and screaming, the screen is really static-y and the person filming is running behind the screaming girl. Cam grabs Booths hand and Brennan who is standing behind them sees. We then switch back to the computer screen to see a guy who looks scared witlessly filming himself whilst running, saying to the screen that the screaming girl (Lauren) has disappeared. The guy then starts screaming that ‘she’s here’ – there is now a copping sound in the background. We see Angela who looks like she is going to burst into tears. We then see the guy again and blood is thrown all over is face. The screen fades out and goes white.

The screen then cut to the Bones introduction.

We then cut to Hodgins, Brennan and Zach in the lab discussing the tape. Zach can’t get the screams out of his head. The subject then moves onto horror films and whether an axe was used in the decapitation. Cam enters with new evidence for Hodgins and says that the tox screens came back negative showing he was not on drugs. But they decide to re-do them once finding disturbing ramblings about Maggie Cinders in Graham’s (the victim) backpack. Brennan calls the rest of the team out on being irrational and teases them whilst leaving.

Brennan and Booth meet Grahams brother, Will and they find out that Graham and his Will’s parents died in a car crash when they were younger and Graham was then raised by Will. Brennan and Will form a bond over the loss of their parents. They flirt a little. Booth is uncomfortable and changes the topic to the night where they find out that Graham was out in the forest with another guy (Brian) and a girl (Laurie). They then talk about the search for Graham and we learn that the brother blames himself.

Screen switches to Zach and Cam discussing when Cams mother appeared to her and talk about how she felt – we learn that Zach wishes is was possible that it actually happened. Hodgins enters and Cam leaves and Hodgins and Zach practise using different weapons to find out which was used to behead Graham.

Scene then cuts to Booth and Brennan in car. We learn from Booth that Graham was at film school on a scholarship and once Graham went missing the scholarship was given to Brian, the other guy out in the woods with him that night. Brennan is distracted and contemplates what life would have been like if her brother had stayed and raised her. Booth and Brennan then share a ‘moment’. Brennan then says that she and Brian have a connection and are going for coffee. Brennan then tells Booth that she knows about him and Cam, Booth is defensive and self conscious.

Booth talks to Brian about Graham and the night in the woods and about the chopping sounds they heard. We find out that Laurie the girl in the forest freaked out and went running off and they all got separated. Brian found Laurie and got her out of the forest and they left. We find out that Laurie has been institutionalised.

Booth is talking to Laurie about the night and she doesn’t believe he is dead but simply lost in the woods. We find out that they were dating but they kept it a secret as other girls would get jealous. When Laurie finds out that Graham is dead she thinks Maggie Cinders murdered him and then she jumps up and starts screaming and having flashbacks and is then restrained.

The scene cuts to the lab, Booth is telling Brennan how she reacted they walk into the main lab where Zach is working and they find out Grahams shoulder was broken after he was murdered, so they might be able to find out where Graham was murdered from the particulates that collected in the neck wound while he was being dragged. Booth then advised Brennan not to go for coffee with Graham’s brother as they are working a case involving him but Brennan claims she can com-part metallise.

Brennan is out for coffee with Will – Graham’s brother. Brennan is nervous and starts blathering about the effects of coffee. They then discuss music and Brennan says she has limited social skills but Will reassures her that they are fine. They then talk about her brother leaving after her parents disappeared and him staying after his died. Will blames himself for Graham’s big head. They talk about Graham’s girlfriend Laurie and Brennan finds out that he was cheating on her with several other girls. Brennan then runs off as she thinks this may be a lead but rearranges a date for another time.

Scene cuts to Angela listening to loud music which muffles the screams while watching the tapes, Hodgins enters and scares her and reveals that Graham was murdered near a specific type of tree and that they need to watch all of the footage again. Hodgins and Angela start watching the footage again. Angela upset holds Hodgins hand and Hodgins puts his arm around her. We see blood running down a tree in the footage.

Scene cuts to Booth, Zach and Brennan in tab over bones of Graham, Brennan reveals to Booth about Grahams various girlfriends. Booth asks Brennan if she thinks that Laurie killed Graham because he was cheating on her. Brennan says that it is more his area of expertise. Booth misunderstands what she said and thinks that she is implying that he is cheating or cheated on someone. Brennan points out that she means the use of psychology. Brennan points out that Booth is being very touchy. Booth glares at Zach when he enquires what they are talking about and Zach withdraws his question. Booth starts hypothesising. Booth and Brennan argue about whether it is possible for Laurie to have attacked and beheaded Graham due to her small stature. Cam enters and reveals it is possible as she was on PCP drugs which can increase strength and it can also be the reason for her mental condition.

Booth confronts Brian and his and Grahams film teacher and they discuss Graham and the film which Brian is working on which is playing in the background which Brian is producing. Booth talks to Brian alone about the PCP drugs but Brian insists that they were not doing drugs that evening. Brain also insists that Laurie did not murder Graham and he insists that there was something else out there.

Scene cuts to Hodgins and Angela watching the footage, Angela closes her eyes and puts her head on Hodgins shoulder – scared by what she is watching as she knows what is about to happen. Angela begrudgingly opens her eyes and then spots the trees they were looking for and they discover where Graham was murdered. Hodgins says that he loves her eyes, Angela looks pleased. They then see a watch on screen enabling them to use the moon to pinpoint where they were. Hodgins and Angela share a moment and stare into each others eyes.

The scene cuts to day time in the woods, Booth and Brennan are out after having been called in after Graham’s skull and the axe were discovered however a second skull was discovered near by and there are no outstanding cases in the area.

The scene cuts to Angela, Zach, Hodgins, Cam and Brennan in the lab. One skull is identified as Grahams and the axe dates back to the 18th centaury and is confirmed to be the murder weapon. The second skull is revealed to be female and also from the 18th centaury. It is discovered that Graham was hit on the head before he was beheaded. However the second skull shows evidence of brain surgery, a typical test for witchcraft in the 18th centenary. The team hypothesize over whether the second skull could be that of Maggie Cinders.

Scene cuts to Booth and Brennan in her office talking about the ramblings found in Grahams backpack that where written on the back of a screen play – the same one which Brian is not producing and claims to have written. Brian stole Grahams screen play.

Scene cuts to Brennan and Booth interrogating Brian who confesses that he stole Grahams script after Graham was missing for a couple of months. Brian also tells them that when he found Laurie was covered with blood when he found her and he hid the clothing in the woods.

Cuts to Brennan and Booth in car, Booth teases guy on phone who is searching forest for the clothing and the murder place. Brennan accuses Booth of being edgy. Booth changes topic and says he does not know why he did not tell her about Cam. He says he has never had a relationship like this where they were like two guys but she’s a woman, Booth says essentially that she is a guy like him. Brennan then says that that would make him a woman, and she says she could see that, which makes Booth uncomfortable and awkward. The phone rings and they have found the clothes, Booth continues to tease the guy on the phone but is hung up upon.

Scene cuts out to Booth, Cam and Brennan in lab, Zach enters and reveals that the second skull has a serial number and was stolen from the medical teaching lab at the university.

Scene cuts to Booth, Brennan and Graham’s film teacher who took part in the stealing of his play along with Brian. It is revealed that his key card was used to enter the medical building at 2am three days before Graham was murdered. He then says that his key card was stolen. Brennan and Booth accuse him of murdering Graham and setting up the skull and axe to make it look like Maggie Cinders did it so that he could steal Graham’s screen play as Graham would not include him in the film. The teacher asks for a lawyer.

The scene cuts to Booth and Brennan wandering through the Jeffersonian’s hallways discussing the case and possible scenarios. Angela says she has found somebody else in the woods on the footage. Booth and Brennan follow Angela into where she and Hodgins were watching the film. Hodgins is watching the footage with his feet up and a bowl of popcorn. Booth asks him why he is there and Angela retorts because she wants him there. Using a mass recognition program Angela shows that there was a third man out in the woods that night at a height of 6.1. Booth and Brennan hypothesise about who it could be.

The scene cuts to Brennan out to dinner with Will – Graham’s older brother. Brennan says that they think that it could be the film teacher and tells Will about it. Will and Brennan are very sweet together and flirt and then kiss.

The scene cuts to Cam, Zach, Angela and Booth in the lab and we find out that there is some of the killer’s blood on the handle but the DNA is very similar. Hodgins enters and tells them that remains of flame retardant were found on the handle of the axe – and it is only used by professional fire fighters. Booth remembers that Will is a fire-fighter; he is about the height of the man Angela found on the tape and they are blood relatives which would explain why the DNA would be similar. Booth realises Will killed his brother and remembers Brennan is out on a date with him.

Scene cuts to the restaurant where Booth interrupts Will and Brennan’s date, Booth arrests Will for the murder of Graham and tells Brennan the information that supports it. He says he did it because he could not be responsible for raising a monster. He then claims that Maggie Cinders made him do it. Brennan tells Booth to take him away and she leaves the restaurant and she begins to cry.

Scene cuts to Hodgins and Angela, Angela is finishing up cataloguing the film footage and Hodgins is lying on the couch and they are chatting. The last piece of footage has finished rendering and they watch it and they see a ghost like figure hovering in the backgrounds in the wood, they try to rationalise it buy sound shaken. Angela asks to stay the night at Hodgins and he agrees.

The scene cuts to Brennan talking to Booth about her bad choice in men and how she cannot read people. She says it is a good job she likes being alone. Booth tells her she is not alone and gives her a hug.

Brennan awakes in a car not realizing where she is. When she rolls down the window, she realizes that the car had been buried underground. She turns to find Hodgins in the back seat with broken legs. She realizes that they’ve been caught by the Grave Digger.
FLASHBACK 48 hours before Brennan and Booth arrive to a crime scene in the woods where a sheriff claims local kids found a flying saucer with aliens onboard. When Brennan gets a look she discerns that they are two young boys and the “flying saucer” is a beer vat sealed shut. Judging by their decomposition, she knows they’ve been dead for years.
At the lab with both bodies out for examination, Zack explains that one of the bodies has multiple broken bones while the other body has none. Also with the amount of blood found in the vat, he thinks that the boy with the injuries bled to death, while the other boy would have later suffocated. He also adds that they were twins. Booth enters with a photo of the boys, Matthew and Ryan Kent. They were abducted in 2001.
Booth & Brennan sit with AUSA Kim Kurland and ex FBI agent Pete Sanders. They worked the Kent case in 2001. Since then Sanders has become a drunk, but Kurland has remained on the case. Sanders told the Kent parents not to pay the ransom, following FBI protocol, but the Grave Digger didn’t budge. The Grave Digger has consistently been cooperative when he is paid on time and has never revealed the location of the buried hostages without being paid. Kurland tells Booth & Brennan to talk to Thomas Vega, who wrote a book on the Grave Digger.
Booth & Brennan sit with Vega and question him. Vega is joined by a journalist, Janine O’ Connell, whom helped Vega write his books. They seem to admire and loath the Grave Digger all at once and it doesn’t sit well with Booth.
In the lab, Zack finds burn marks on the neck of one of the boys, most likely from a stun gun, but the other boy with the broken bones does not have the same markings. Hodgins arrives with info that concludes that the boys were most likely in an indoor parking lot before they were kidnapped. Brennan tells both Zack and Hodgins to compare their findings with the files on past victims.
Booth & Brennan sit with the father of the twins, James Kent. He’s not thrilled to be working with the FBI again after their advice led to his boys’ death. While cross referencing facts with Mr. Kent, Brennan gets a text message from Hodgins saying that the twins only had 12 hours of air while the Grave Digger gave Mr. Kent 24 hours to wire the money, which means the Grave Digger either was going to kill them anyway or he miscalculated his kidnapping and had to take both boys instead of one.
In the car Booth & Brennan discuss religion. Brennan says the Grave Digger is like God: giving a deadline, and a set of rules that are non-negotiable. Booth takes offense, and Brennan asks if she could go to church with him sometime. He says no, if she wants to conduct an anthropological study, to watch the religious channel on TV.
Back at the lab, Brennan and the squints examine the containers that the past victims were buried in and Hodgins inspects their clothes to find the same residue that would confirm that all of the victims were taken from indoor parking lots.
Around the Angelator, Angela shows Booth & Brennan a scenario proving that the injuries to the one twin happened before he was put into the vat, but Brennan adds that the amount of blood on the floor couldn’t have come from his skeletal injuries. Booth chimes in with his idea that the Grave Digger probably tried to kidnap just one of the twins and when the brother showed up and interfered, he was hit with a car a then kidnapped as well.
Brennan heads out to a martial arts class and while at her car is approached from behind and then falls unconscious. Hodgins comes out to find her, but is then hit by a car.
With Cam and Booth out to dinner, they talk about their relationship. Booth gets a call on his phone from the Grave Digger asking for 8 million dollars in exchange for Brennan and Hodgins location.
Booth is joined by AUSA Kurland, Vega, and O’Connell and they discuss a plan for getting their friends back. Vega suggests that they do as the Grave Digger asks and O’Connell wonders why he’s asking for so much money. Booth explains that Hodgins is the only living heir of the Cantilever Group.
Now back with Brennan and Hodgins in the buried car where we left them in the teaser, Brennan dresses his wounds from the car accident and they try and piece together what’s happened to them. Neither of them have memory what happened just before they woke up in the car. They calculate that they have only 10 hours of air left.
In the lab, Booth gathers the squints to fill them in. They head to the parking lot to scope out the area around Brennan’s car. Cam spots a puddle of blood and they call for FBI to inspect the scene.
In the buried car, Brennan takes inventory of what they have to survive: water, some pens, a laser pointer, two broken cell phone with no batteries, a camera with extra lithium batteries, and her latest novel. Hodgins also has a bottle of perfume that he purchased for Angela. Hodgins complains of leg pain and Brennan thinks he might have compartment syndrome and he could slip into shock and die.
In the lab, Cam presses Zack for info. Zack says that the stun gun search was a dead end, but he did find that the injured twin stabbed himself in the neck with a pen, killing himself. Zack doesn't know why he would do that, and says he doesn't do the "why" he only does the "how", Cam thinks he did it to give his brother more air. Zack doesn’t know why that matters and Cam tells him that it will matter when she tells their father that one of his sons sacrificed himself so the other could live (even if it was in vain).
In the buried car, Brennan has an idea of how Hodgins can avoid the compartment syndrome. She must make a long incision along his leg to relieve the pressure. The pain will be high and it could send him into shock, but he will surely go into shock if they don’t do something. Hodgins rips out a page from Dr. Brennan's Book and writes a note, and puts it in his pocket. Brennan asks if it is a note to Angela. Hodgins says yes, just in case, and then explains that he is over-the-moon stupid-in-love with Angela, and that's why he bought her the three-thousand dollar an ounce perfume, because that kind of gift says I love you, and now that he has said it out loud, he is ready for Brennan to perform the surgery. Before the incision, Brennan finds some kind of sticker in his leg, a clue, but says they will deal with it later, and stores it in the pages of her book for safety. She then cuts in.
In the lab, Cam meets with Booth to find out that the Cantilever Group has a policy of never paying for ransom without a proof of life and Hodgins is the one who created the rule. They think that they must have been close to finding something on the Kent boys' case and the Grave Digger wanted to take them off course.
In the buried car, Hodgins wakes up from a car horn blast to Brennan’s relief. She’s been working on hotwiring her cell phone to the wires of the car horn. If they hold down the horn they might be able to send one text message before frying her phone, but first they need to figure out what message to send. Brennan grabs some of the dirt that leaked in when she opened the window in the beginning, and gives it the “the dirt man” himself to find out where they are. He finds coal in the dirt, which means they’re in coal country, specifically Virginia. He uses the chemicals in the perfume and the laser pointer while looking through the lens of the camera to find out what kind of coal, to narrow down the destination, he tells Brennan he knows where they are.
Booth is in his office impatient, and Vega comes in and says that Booth should face facts, the Grave Digger is always consistent, and doesn't make mistakes, if he doesn't deliver the ransom, his partner will die. Booth throws him on the table in a choke hold and tells him that he has a close relationship with the Grave Digger, and that he better figure out a way to help, because if his partner (Brennan) dies, he will end Vega. Then lets him go and says that Vega has three hours, and he better hurry.
While Brennan readies the phone to send their message, Hodgins figures out that he was indeed hit by a car, because the sticker fragment that Brennan found in his leg is from a pre-paid toll road bumper sticker. Hodgins has also figured out an eight keystroke message to send, and she says they will only have 4 - 6 seconds to type n the message and hit speed-dial. She honks and Hodgins sends it. It sparks, and she asks if it was sent, and they both agree they think it sent.
Booth gets the encoded text message in his office. He runs to the lab to ask the squints if they can crack the code, but the 10 hours has passed and they assume that Brennan and Hodgins have run out of air. Booth won’t settle for this.
In the buried car, Brennan has cut through the back seat into the truck for more air. She also cuts into the spare tire, but it’s looking bleak. She says that Booth will find them, and he tells her that she has a lot of faith in him. She says that is not true, faith is irrational, and she has seen what he can do, and she knows. Hodgins says that they are buried underground, and no offense, but what she has is faith. Hodgins then realizes that if he leaks the batteries and mixes them with the powder and water that Brennan has, he can create oxygen, but not much. She has another idea, since they have more oxygen, but it may kill them. She will use the explosives from the airbags to blast the windshield. Hodgins says that will surely kill them, and she says that so will doing nothing.
At the lab, Booth is flying off the handle because the squints have given up, but he won’t let that happen. He orders them to keep thinking of ways to locate them. They go through with Cam leading them step by step, "jumping to conclusions" about the message. They decide that the message is numbers, so it is intended for Zack, and that it is about dirt, because Hodgins is all about dirt. Vega comes in with Janine O' Connell and says that he used all her contacts, but the Grave Digger won't call. Zack suddenly realizes the meaning of the text message, and narrows their location down to a specific place, and they head out to find Brennan and Hodgins along with Vega and O' Connell .
In the buried car, Brennan has rigged the explosive. If they are less then four feet below the surface this could get them to freedom, if not, the concussion will "turn their brains to jelly". Hodgins rips out a page from the book and hands it to Brennan, so she can write goodbye to who she wants, just-in-case.
Booth and the team arrive to where they think Brennan and Hodgins are buried. The area they need to search is a little greater than three football fields, but with help from the FBI they spread out.
Inside the car Hodgins and Brennan are ready for the blast, they are sitting in the back seat, as far away from the blast they can get. They hug, and touch the wires together.
Just when it starts to look bleak, Booth spots a puff of dust shooting through the ground; the explosion from the airbags. He bolts over, starts digging, and everyone follows. Brennan and Hodgins are pulled to the surface. Brennan and Booth share a knowing look, and Angela and Hodgins kiss.
Later, Angela walks up to Hodgins in the lab, asking him why he left the hospital without being discharged, and stole crutches that she had to pay for, and he says that he needs to find out who the Grave Digger is, and he can't go to sleep anyway. Angela thought they gave him sleeping pills, but Hodgins is afraid that if he goes to sleep, when he opens his eyes he will be back in the car, buried. Angela insists that he come home with her and when he opens his eyes, she will be there, and he agrees.
Flash to Booth kneeling, praying in church, with Brennan sitting in a pew next to him. She asks what Booth asked for, and he says he won't tell, except that he asked for help in finding the Grave Digger, and he gave thanks. Brennan explains that even though she still doesn't believe in God, she is glad that Both thanked God for Hodgins' and her being found. He says he thanked God not for her and Hodgins being rescued, but for saving all of them. They are all connected and if one of them goes, then they are all stuck down in that hole.
*this is the end of the aired version of the show, but the official website also adds this information to the ending:
Later, Brennan shows Booth the toll road sticker she found in Hodgins’ leg. They run it and it links them to Janine O’Connell. They arrest her and the case is closed.

Booth: That's why I brought you to Sin City Bones.

This is an allusion to another nickname for Las Vegas, Nevada. It is known as such partly due to the popularity of legalized gambling, availability of alcoholic beverages at any time (as is true throughout Nevada), and various forms and degrees of adult entertainment. Another tagline has come from Sin City lore; "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas"alluding to the many indiscretions that happen to occur there. (edit) Booth: This is America's Frying Pan.

This is an allusion to the heat of the desert around Las Vegas. In the summer, it reaches over one hundred degrees pretty much every day, and has since earned this nickname. (edit) Booth: No, Bones we are 15 miles off the strip.

"The Strip" is 4 mi (6.7 km) of Las Vegas Boulevard South partly in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, that has been designated an All-American Road. Many of the largest hotel, casino and resort properties in the world are located on The Strip. Over the years, Las Vegas Boulevard South has been called Arrowhead Highway, "Salt Lake Highway", U.S. Highway 91, and "Los Angeles Highway". The Strip was reportedly named by police officer Guy McAfee, after his hometown's Sunset Strip, in Los Angeles. (edit) Dr. Brennan: So this is America's Playground?

America's playground is a nickname for Las Vegas, in that it is like a big playground for adults, games and rides and casino's and entertainment galore! (edit) When praised by Booth for her performance as Roxanne, Brennan explains: "That's from when I used to watch old movies with my dad. He really liked Clara Bow."

It's an allusion to a real silent movies' star Clara Bow (who was also known as a person who prefer playing poker with her cook, maid, and chauffeur over attending her movie premieres). (edit)

Booth and Brennan are walking to the water treatment plant where human remains were found. Brennan doesn’t understand why so much of people’s tax dollars go to pay for on water treatment when billons of dollars are spent on bottled water.

They discover that the victim that they now know is a girl between the age of 8 and 10, had bleached hair, was wearing makeup, and had false teeth. Hodgins comments with “What is she a midget stripper?”

Angela brings up the topic of what childhood should be like. She says that childhood should be all about swings. Hodgins agrees with her and says that he misses that. Brennan adds that she misses organic chemistry class and Zack misses his first microscope. Booth misses normal people too.

Brennan and Booth talk to Brianna Swanson’s mother after they have confirmed the identity of the victim. Jackie Swanson believes that Brianna’s father David is responsible for her death and disappearance.

Hodgins, Cam, and Zack talk about the case and obtain important information. Cam says she will call Booth and inform him but not before Hodgins makes a sexual indo about her and Booth.

Booth and Brennan question David Swanson who believes that everything is his ex-wife Jackie’s fault because she wasted so much time accusing him for the disappearance of their daughter that the case went cold. He wants Brianna’s remains so that he can give her a proper burial because he thinks that his ex-wife would turn Brianna’s funeral into a sick show.

Back in Angela’s office Angela and Hodgins talk about the case. Hodgins asks Angela out on a date. Angela says no because they work together and Hodgins tells her that she is making a mistake. In reply Angela tells Hodgins that she will try and get details from the paper that he found in Brianna’s pocket.

Zack and Brennan compare the victim’s rib cage to that of a ten-year-old of the time period and then to a teenage girl from1872. They have learned that Brianna was wearing a corset while sleeping and suffering from malnourishment. Cam adds that it gets even better. Brianna’s tox- screen came back with traces of somatropin, tetracycline, and glycol-bromium bromide, which Zack translates as; human growth hormone, broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat acne, and a chemical mixture to prevent perspiration. He also adds that all of these things have serious side effects.

After Zack has finished Angela walks in with news. Jackie and Brianna were fighting a half an hour before Brianna disappeared. Brennan and Booth go to talk with Jackie Swanson yet again after viewing the video that Angela had brought to their attention.

While discussing the case Cam and Zack learn the Brianna Swanson was dead before she was beaten.

Angela tells Brennan that Hodgins asked her out on a date and that she needs advise. Brennan tells Angela that Romance isn’t really her area of expertise. Cam walks into Brennan’s office in order to ask Angela if she has made any progress. Angela tells her that she hasn’t made any progress and Cam turns to leave but Angela calls her back. Since Brennan had nothing to offer her Angela wants to ask Cam her opinion on the matter. Cam agrees to help.

Cam: What’d you tell him?
Angela: No.
Cam: Why
Brennan: Because it would be a disaster!

Brennan continues to say that you should never become involved with someone you work with. Cam doesn’t believe that and suggests that Angela go on the date but tells her that it will be bad, but after a few days everything will go back to normal. Brennan surprisingly agrees with Cam. Brennan has to leave this conversation behind though because she must go meet Booth.

Booth and Brennan arrive at the dance studio. The dance teacher Charlotte Craft is also in charge of the Junior miss patriot pageant. Booth believes that because of this she may have important information. Booth and Brennan talk to one of the mothers at the dance studio. After the lesson is over Booth takes off to talk to Charlotte Craft while telling Bones to talk with the girls because she is a civilian.

Hodgins discovers that Brianna died within a one mile radius of the hotel she disappeared from. He tells Cam that he thinks Brianna was shoved into a storm culvert and washed to the treatment plant after some bad storms that hit the area a few weeks before. Cam leaves to call and update Booth on the information and Angela walks up to Hodgins. Angela has changed her mind about the date and takes Hodgins upon his offer.

Booth talks to Charlotte Craft. She shows Booth a picture that she took on her cell phone of Jeremy Farrell, a contestant’s older brother. Charlotte admits that she didn’t show that picture to law enforcement before, because she believes that Jeremy is harmless.

While Booth is talking to Charlotte, Brennan is talking to the girls about Brianna. The girls tell her that Brianna was mean and would steal things that belonged to them if she liked. They also tell her that they weren’t really friends with Brianna; they were forced to be her friend because she was the queen. Brennan goes on to give the girls an anthropological explanation for this.

Booth questions Jeremy about the day Brianna disappeared and if he had talked to her. Jeremy says that he did talk to her and they argued because Brianna was being mean to his little sister. Booth asks Jeremy if he can have his shoes because Hodgins found traces of steel and Jeremy’s shoes have a steel toe.

Hodgins confirms that Jeremy’s shoes were not made from the same material that killed Brianna.

Angela and Hodgins go out on their date. Hodgins decided to take Angela to the park to swing.

While Cam and Brennan are trying to figure out what the paper in Brianna’s jacket was Booth walks in. Booth realizes that the paper is the wrapper to a milk blast bar.

On Angela and Hodgins date Hodgins is twisting Angela around on the swings. They share a kiss.

Booth and Brennan decide to do a little investigating on their own while they wait for the FBI’s forensic team to find the culvert Brianna was hidden in. While they do their search they stumble onto the crime scene. They find a pageant medal at the crime scene.

Zack and Brennan examine at the culvert. Angela comes in and has found a news article with the pictures and names of the three winners of the 1976 competition.

Booth questions Kristen Mitchell because the pageant medal they found belonged to her. He believes that she killed Brianna Swanson so her daughter would win the competitions. Booth asks her if she reported the medal missing and her answer is that she wants a lawyer.

Zack and Brennan discover that the killer has scoliosis. Brennan calls Booth to have him see if Kristen Mitchell has even hips and Booth beams her footage of the interview so she can figure it out. Kristen Mitchell doesn’t have scoliosis so she is not the murderer.

Booth returns to the lab where Brennan tells him that she thinks they may have found the murder weapon. A parking lot curb from the convenient store. Brianna’s neck broke on the curb and then she was dragged to the culvert. Hodgins comes in to tell them that the steel he found wasn’t from work boots but from tap shoes. One of the contestants is the murderer.

Brennan and Booth go to the pageant to try and find out who there killer is. Brennan is trying to figure out which one of the girls has scoliosis and is accused of being a child molester.

Booth and Brennan watch the girls perform so Brennan can see which contestant has scoliosis.

The murderer is Hailey Farrell. She doesn’t deny it, but says that it was an accident. Brianna was making fun of her, she said that Hailey was ugly and never won anything.

Angela and Hodgins finally discuss their date. Angela tells him that it was perfect but that they can’t do it again because when it goes wrong it will go really wrong and everyone else will get pulled into it. Hodgins asks what if but Angela says friends.

Brennan and Booth have a conversation about the case. Booth says Brennan is well structured after stumbling for a few moments and Brennan says Booth is well structured too. Booth offers to help Bones with the paperwork from the case. Bones allows him to stay and help and they order Tai food.

Brennan: You ok?
Booth: (thoughtful and unsure) Yeah. I just, I remembered that I had an appointment. (He gets up preparing to leave)
Brennan: (disappointedly) Oh, so I'll see you tomorrow?
(Booth looks at Cam waiting downstairs and then looks at Brennan)
Booth: No. You know, you have all the paperwork from the case right?
Brennan: No, I was gonna stay, do it anyway, so -
Booth: Nah, no, you know, it's our case, I wanna help.
Brennan: You don't have to Booth.
Booth: Bones, just drop it, ok? (in a Basso profondo) I'm here to help.
Brennan: Well, what about your appointment?
Booth: It's, you know, it's no big deal. I'll tell you what. How about I (he rests his arms upon the table while standing and leans in really close to her) order some take out and ditch these donuts.
Brennan: (with a big smile) Sure.
Booth and Brennan: Thai food.
(They both smile at each other and share a moment)
Booth: This time I'm ordering extra crab because last time you ate it all.
Brennan: What? I thought you were done. (edit) Jack: We haven't had the chance to talk today
Angela: Yeah. I was avoiding you.
Jack: That whole swing thing wasn't good enough, right? 'Cause I can do better.
Angela:It was perfect. (edit) Angela: And what the great date tells us, is that when this goes wrong....
Jack: It'll go really, really wrong.
Angela So...we go back, right? Friends.
Jack: Sure. Friends. Just one more question. What if it doesn't end that way? What if it doesn't go wrong?
Angela: (tearfully) Friends. (edit) Brennan: I mean, look at this. Millions of tax dollars are spent to clean and treat tap water, and yet people spend billions on bottled water.
Booth: Well it's cleaner, look: It comes from a clean mountain stream.
Brennan: Yeah, which contains fecal matter from animals.
Booth: There's no...bones in it, though, is there? (mumbles) Don't want that in your water. (edit) Booth: (to Brennan about Milk Blast bars) Are you kidding me? These are God's food! (edit)

When Angela makes a sketch of the girl, why does she change the hairstyle to approximate the missing person database photo? (edit) Goof: At the very end when Booth and Brennan are talking, and he says she is "structured well" her hair goes from sweeping across her forehead to tucked behind her ears in the next shot without her moving it. (This is caused by different takes of the same scene being cut together to obtain the best performance) (edit)

Title: The Girl with the Curl

This is an allusion to the nursery rhyme:
"There was a little girl,
who had a little curl,
right in the middle of her forehead,
and when she was good,
she was very very good,
but when she was bad,
she was horrid."

This is a also refering to Briana, appearing to be a sweet little beauty queen, but really being a vicious competitor. (edit)
